About This Temple
The Narmada Shaktipeeth, located in Amarkantak, Madhya Pradesh, is a revered pilgrimage site associated with two potential variants of the 51 Shakti Peethas: the Shondesh (or Sonakshi) variant and the Kalmadhav variant. Both are situated near the origin of the sacred Narmada River. The site is highly significant in Hinduism, believed to be the spot where parts of Goddess Sati's body fell during Lord Shiva's grief-stricken journey with her corpse. Shondesh Variant: This location is traditionally associated with the falling of the right buttock (hip) of Goddess Sati. Kalmadhav Variant: This location is traditionally associated with the falling of the left buttock (hip) of Goddess Sati. The presence of both sites in the same complex (Narmada Udgam temple area) is seen to symbolize a complete manifestation of the divine feminine energy. The area itself is picturesque, located at the confluence of the Vindhya and Satpura mountain ranges.
