Katha
Suryavanshi King Sagara of Ayodhya held a Ashwameda Yajna, a sacred horse sacrifice ritual performed by kings.
In this ritual, a horse was left to roam free across the kingdoms and any king who dared to stop the horse had to go to war with the king performing the ritual.
This Yajna was done to show the strength and brilliance of the king and his kingdom.
Devraj Indra grew jealous of King Sagara and hence acting upon his instinctive desire devised a plan to disrupt the said Yajna.
He took the sacrificial horse and tied it near Sage KapilaтАЩs hermitage.
The king sent his 60,000 sons to search for the horse, who all went and after searching they found the horse near Kapila Muni who at that time was in deep meditation.
His sons thought the Muni was the culprit and had stolen their horse so they insulted him and hence his meditation was disturbed.
The Muni woke up from his meditation in anger and the wrath filled in his eyes was so intense that they were immolated on the spot.
And because their last rites were not performed properly they couldn't attain salvation.
Then many generations later King Bhagirath sought out to bring a solution for their problem.
He consulted sages and they told him of a river of purity which flows in Swarg Loka.
Hence Bhagirath performed severe penance and finally asked for Ganga to come down to earth as a boon from Brahma Dev.
But Brahma Dev told him that GangaтАЩs flow is too strong and fast for earth to take and it will be destroyed by her strength.
So, Bhagirath again performed penance to Mahadeva who caught Ganga falling from Brahma DevaтАЩs kalash onto earth and gently let her down.
After which BhagirathтАЩs ancestors were liberated of their suffering after bathing in the holy river.
ThereтАЩs more to this tale and it is told on Ganga Saptami.
