Ganga Saptami Katha

When Mata Ganga came down to earth after the severe penance of King Bhagirath, her flow was very fast for which Lord Shiva helped by holding her in his matted locks ‘Jatta’ and gently released her on her earth.

But her flow was still fast and even though she brought the divine blessing, it also caused disturbances. And in her passage she passed by Jahnu Rishi’s ashram and disturbed his penance and his hermitage was also flooded.

Enraged by such an act of Ganga he drank the whole river in one sip.

After knowing of the vanishment of Ganga, King Bhagirath was saddened. He then went to Jahnu Rishi and prayed to him to release the divine river. He explained the divine reason of Ganga on this earth and how his ancestors were waiting for liberation of their sins.

Jahnu Rishi was moved with the dedication and intent of Bhagirath so he agreed to release Ganga.

Then he released her from his ear thus her being called Jhanvi, “daughter of Jahnu” as she had emerged from his body.

Ways to celebrate this day

This day can be celebrated by

Chanting mantras like:
“ॐ गंगे च यमुने चैव…”

Donating food, clothes or money to the needy is also a great way to celebrate the holy day.
