The story of Tirupati Balaji or Tirumala is interesting in its own way.

Once Sage Bhrigu wanted to test all the deities, so he went on his conquest. First he went to Devraj Indra, there he saw that Indra was busy with apsaras and ignored Bhrigu so he cursed him that he would be known as arrogant throughout the time.

Then he went to Brahma Dev who was busy in creation and chanting Vedas, with his consort Saraswati. He was more enraged by this and felt insulted and cursed him to not be worshipped by anyone.

After this farce in Brahmaloka he went to Kailash to Shiva who was in Meditation with his wife so again feeling provoked he cursed Shiva too that he would only be worshipped as a lingam (formless)

Then he went to Vishnuloka and saw that in middle of Kshir Sagar on Sheshnaag was lying Lord Vishnu the preserver, with Laxmi at his feet but seeing his feet the first when he appeared he took it as an insult to himself and deliberate provocation from Vishnu and so he kicked the chest of resting Vishnu.
But Vishnu didn’t get angry but woke up smiling and massaged Bhrigu’s feet and asked if he was hurt.

Seeing Vishnu the great preserver still smiling and showing such humility Bhrigu was happy and satisfied but Laxmii was not.

She felt insulted that Bhrigu kicked Vishnu’s chest where she resides. And she was angry that Vishnu didn’t say anything to rebuke Bhrigu but was all smiles and even massaging his feet asking if he was hurt.
So she went to Prithviloka in anger.

Vishnu missed his consort so he also went down to Prithvi and settled as Shrinivasa in Sheshachalam. He spent his life meditating and he fell in love with Princess Padmavati and to marry her in grandiose he borrowed from Kubera the god of wealth, and also mentioned in many places is Laxmii’s brother.

He had promised that he would repay that loan till the end of Kali Yuga with interest. It is said that till now the lord is repaying that loan.

This tale is mentioned in many places but there are other stories related to Tirupati Balaji Temple and Lord Venkateshwara.

In all these stories it is correct to say that the lord, reluctant to leave his devotees alone in the Kali Yuga, stayed back on the mountains to oversee and protect.
