Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga

Lord Shiva

About

Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, located in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. Lord Shiva is worshipped here as Mahakal, the supreme ruler of time and death. This temple is uniquely revered because the Jyotirlinga is Swayambhu (self-manifested) and faces south (Dakshinamurti), symbolizing Shiva’s power over time and mortality. Situated on the banks of the holy Shipra River, Mahakaleshwar is especially famous for the divine Bhasma Aarti, and devotees believe that darshan here grants protection, liberation, and freedom from fear of death.
