She undertook penance in a cave, later known as the holy cave of Vaishno Devi, where she merged into a rock formation and revealed herself in the form of three natural rock pindis, each representing Goddess Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, and Mahasaraswati.
It is believed that the demon Bhairavnath chased her into the cave, seeking to capture her. When he refused to leave her alone, the goddess beheaded him. However, in an act of compassion, she granted him salvation and a place near her shrine. Today, the pilgrimage is considered incomplete without a visit to the Bhairavnath Temple located near the main cave.

The journey to the Vaishno Devi shrine is often described as a test of faith and devotion. Pilgrims chant "Jai Mata Di" as they ascend the steep path. Along the route, there are various stops like Banganga, Charan Paduka, and Ardh Kuwari Cave, each with its own spiritual story.
